Mindfulness-based psychological support

 

For those seeking healing, steadiness, thriving, or a more compassionate way of living.

Grounded in mindfulness and cognitive therapy, I offer group and individual sessions — in Budapest or online, in English or Dutch.
 

Research shows that mindfulness trainings have many benefits including, reduced feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, improved ability to cope with pain and illness, less worrying and obsessing over things, greater appreciation of what is pleasant and enjoyable in life, feeling clearer about what is truly meaningful, and living life with a stronger sense of purpose, improved overall wellbeing, even in difficult times.

My approach is trauma-sensitive and compasionate. I integrate mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and skills from dialectic behavior therapy (DBT). I work with the whole being instead of mainly focussing on symptoms. Treating the symptom alone is like cutting weeds at the surface -- they grow back.

What will you learn?

Mindfulness for Life is a skills-based course rather than therapy. It cultivates the following understandings:

  • Mindfulness starts when we recognise the tendency to be on automatic pilot, which can rob us of our potential for living life more fully. We begin to practise stepping out of automatic pilot by bringing mindfulness to aspects of everyday present-moment experience that we might normally overlook.

  • With greater awareness, we begin to notice how often we are lost in our thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness of the body and breathing helps us learn to recognise our thoughts, emotions, sensations, and impulses, gather the scattered mind, and return with appreciation to the here and now.

  • We learn that when our attention is caught up in the past or the future, we can get trapped in unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. Mindfulness helps us recognise these automatic reactions, understand them as normal human experiences, and bring kindness and compassion to them.

  • As we cultivate attitudes of interest and friendliness toward all of our experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant, we learn skills for keeping our balance through life’s ups and downs, responding skilfully when difficulties arise, engaging with what is most important to us, and opening up to moments of joy, contentment, and gratitude. We learn to flourish.

Get the best out of your university experience abroad

Having been an international university student myself in Budapest I know the challenges that you face on top of the usual stressors that come with attending higher education. International students compared to their local peers are more likely to suffer from various mental disorders such as anxiety or depression. We can prevent that. Together we can figure out ways to better culturally adapt to a foreign university environment but also to the wider Hungarian context. That way you can more fully experience the time that you spend in Hungary and focus on what is really important: feeling accomplished as a student and growing as a person.

Become more resilient in a new cultural environment

Mindfulness can support you to successfully adapt to a new and different cultural environment. Being an expat myself in Hungary I experienced how moving to another country has a great impact on your daily life functioning. Moving abroad is often considered an exciting adventure, yet few people take into consideration that active adjustment is required and often fall into a black hole when the 'honeymoon period' is over. Homesickness often kicks in and loved ones are missed while a new social support network is not yet in place. I believe it is important to actively engage to make the adaptation process as smoothly as possible.
